How to Prepare for Your First Session

Starting therapy is a courageous step—and we want to make your first session feel as comfortable and empowering as possible. Here’s what you can expect and how you can prepare to make the most of your time with us.

1. Complete Your Intake Forms

Before your first session, you’ll receive digital intake forms via email. These include important information about your background, goals, and consent for services. Please complete these at least 24 hours before your appointment to help your clinician prepare and ensure you get the most from your session.

2. Think About Your Goals

Take a few minutes to reflect on why you’re seeking therapy. What do you hope to gain? Are there specific challenges or emotions you’d like to explore? You don’t need to have all the answers—your therapist will help you clarify your goals—but a little reflection can go a long way.

3. Arrive a Few Minutes Early

If you’re coming in-person, try to arrive 5–10 minutes early to get settled. If your session is virtual, find a quiet, private space with a stable internet connection. Test your device and audio ahead of time to avoid tech stress.

4. Bring Questions or Concerns

It’s normal to feel nervous before your first session. Feel free to bring up any questions about the process, privacy, or what to expect. Your therapist is here to support you and guide you at your pace.

5. Be Yourself

There’s no “right” way to show up for therapy. Come as you are—curious, nervous, overwhelmed, hopeful. Your therapist will meet you with compassion, without judgment.

What Happens During the First Session?

The first session is about getting to know you. Your therapist will review your intake form, ask questions about your history and goals, and begin building a foundation of trust. It’s a conversation, not an interrogation—and you’re always in control of what you choose to share.

If you have any questions before your first session, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re honored to walk with you on this journey.
